Does Your Dog Make Your Smile?
By Cynthia Minnaar of Puppy Dog Training Tips
My little companion, Zoe, is a four year old tri-colored Jack Russell Terrier and she really does bring a smile to my face a few times a day. With me working full-time from home she is with me all the time and we have got to know each other really well. I chat away to her all the time and she can anticipate my every move. I brought Zoe home when she was 7 weeks old and from that day, for some reason, she sulks on cloudy days. Thank goodness here in South Africa most of our days are sunny. But she really makes me laugh because she acts like she hates to see the grey skies. She has a little duvet in her bed and on cloudy days (whether warm or cold) she dives under her duvet and hides away! I can’t help but smile to myself when she comes to me in the study and asks for a cuddle. She puts on that soft little baby face and asks me to pick her up so she can lie on my lap while I work. I walk Zoe twice a day, morning and evening. In the morning after breakfast, which is when we go for our first walk, she comes through to the kitchen, sits down and cocks her head to one side waiting for me to say “shall we go for your walk”. She then rushes down the passage and waits by my cupboard where I keep my walking shoes. I have to smile at the little dejected face when I tell her “I have to go out”. She goes off and sits behind the sofa and peeks out to watch me disappear through the door. She amazes me when the postman comes. She actually hates him and barks like mad. However, if I receive a check in the post then I go to my desk and start completing the bank forms, and immediately Zoe sees me doing this she puts on her dejected face again and goes and sits behind the sofa as she knows I will shortly be going out (to the bank). Zoe also knows the difference between lipstick and lip salve. I keep my lipstick in a holder and if she sees me using it she will come and sit in front of me waiting for an instruction – either to tell her she is coming with me or she was must stay at home. When I use the lip salve she looks at me but does not react as she knows I am not going anywhere. It is amazing how observant they can be. When it’s time to go to bed she gets so excited because she gets 2 biscuits. She grabs her favorite toy and races down to the bedroom and then sits next to it waiting for me to bring her treats. I did take Zoe to puppy dog training classes when she was 4 months old. I did this mainly for her to learn to socialize with other dogs. She was very cheeky at that age and the puppy biting problem was bad. However, we got through those difficult times and now she is a happy, loyal little companion. Well those are just a few of the instances that Zoe brings a smile to my face during the course of the day. Dogs truly are a man’s best friend.
